| Aug 6 2005 | - | Last night was a glorious lightning display but not much good for astronomy. Kellie had family visit so we called it an early night. -- NLM

|
| Aug 3 2005 | - | The telescope tracked very nicely last night I only lost a few frames due to tracking issues. I think we have a slight azimuth misalignment of the pole on the 41-inch. The pads were put down before I arrived so I took them to define the N-S line. Last night the star I was using for tracking in M29 DEC= 38 drifted to the north when east of the Meridian and drifted to the south when west of the Meridian. A DEC drift is a signal of a polar alignment issue as well as a variable track rate . DEC drift near the meridian signals an azimuth problem. The change of sign means I tracked through the line connecting the true sky pole to the telescope pole. The misalignment is not much and we really can t do anything about it except to know of the problem. I also had to lower the track rate as the night progressed. The default value is 65.1 but as I watched the tracking corrections they were consistently east. This means the telescope is tracking too fast. By the end of the run and the telescope pointing a couple of hours west of the meridian I was down to 64.2 about a 1.4 change . The track rate will depend somewhat on the declination. Bottom line - watch the track rate corrections and the tracker will be happier. If the software will allow us to work the DEC axis we would be able to track successfully for long times. As it was I needed to interrupt the process the apply a DEC correction every three images. -- NLM

| Jul 21 2005 | - | Worked on the RA drive for the 41-inch. The gear mesh is a problem. Could be that facing off the drive roller throw off the alignment enough to cause trouble. We will need to look at moving the worm gear and possibly the worm itself. -- NLM
